Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong has intimated that the establishment of the technology transfer office is another giant step in fostering the transfer of innovative outputs from research within the institution to offer impactful solutions to our society.
According to him, in achieving this, from January 2023 to July 2024, the University of Cape Coast has supported 120 faculty members with a total amount of over 1 point 8 million Ghana cedis to attend conferences and workshops.
Speaking at the opening of the first Research and Innovation Week as well as the 9th Research Awards and Grants ceremony of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Nyarko Boampong indicated that the institution’s Design thinking and innovation hub has dedicated resources to ensuring that faculty innovations are accessible, impactful and scalable.
However, he stated that while funding proved to be a challenge to research, faculty of the university had worked extensively to grow research and foster innovation to solve existent problems.
“Irrespective of the difficulty in providing adequate funding for cutting-edge research activities, our faculty have demonstrated commitment, ingenuity, creativity, and tenacity in pushing the frontiers of academic research endeavours,” he said.
Additionally, he said faculty members have expanded partnerships with industries and organizations both locally and globally to overcome resource constraints while ensuring that the University’s research is not only ground-breaking but also responsive to real-world needs.
Director at the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy, Prof. David Teye Doku implored participants to network and share insights to improve research to achieve sustainable development.
He indicated that this could unlock new potential and pave the way for a brighter future for the country and beyond.
The maiden Research and Innovation Week, themed “Funding Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development: The Role of State and Non-State Actors” is organised by the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy of UCC.
The event will consist of public lectures, exhibitions by colleges and round-table discussions.
