In an accident at Akim Asafo in the Eastern Region on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, at least 16 people are presumed dead, with many others wounded.
The accident is said to have occurred at about 1:30 am on Friday during a head-on collision involving two Kia Granbird buses with registration numbers GT 5629-18 and GE 5510-15.
It is assumed that the driver of the vehicle with the registration number GT 5629-18, now dead, caused the accident. 18 passengers from Accra to Kumasi were on board.
On reaching a section of the road at Akim Asafo Junction, the Suhum District Police Commander, Chief Inspector Bernard Atta Asare, who confirmed the incident, said the driver made an unsafe overtaking without noticing traffic from the reverse direction.
In the process, he crashed head-on with the other Kia Granbird bus returning from Sankore in the Ahafo Area to Accra, .

The passengers, consisting of 13 men and 3 women, died on the spot, while others suffered serious injuries and were rushed for treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital and Akim Asafo Health Centre.
The bodies were removed and deposited for storage, identification and autopsy at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary.
The police were helped by staff from the Ghana National Fire Service and Abundance Services from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi and Ayensuano.
Also at the scene to guide traffic were the Suhum Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) District Police Patrol team and Kibi MTTD Police Order.
In the meantime, the cars were towed from the scene to a safer location for the free flow of traffic.
