A comparative analysis of some crime statistics from the first quarters of 2020 and 2021 shows some improvement in policing, with the exception of recorded murders.
According to Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, 144 murder cases were recorded in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 123 in the first quarter of 2020.
He stated that the problem must be resolved, adding that “one life lost in Ghana is one life too many.”
There was a modest improvement in confirmed abduction cases in the first quarter of 2021, with 26 recorded as compared to 27 in the first quarter of 2020.
When evaluating the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, the number of confirmed robberies decreased from 525 to 495.
The Minister also stated that reported rape incidents decreased from 119 to 97 over the same time span.
“Another cause of worry is the loss of life from road traffic accidents,” Mr. Dery said, noting that Ghana had 771 deaths in the first quarter of 2021.
According to the National Public Road Safety Authority, this reflects a 14.8% rise in the number of fatalities from road accidents relative to the first three months of 2020.
